Inquest into man's death after Brockville Jail transfer

Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General has announced an inquest into the death of a man after he was transferred from the Brockville Jail to The Ottawa Hospital in 2019.

A news release Thursday said Claude Motard, 67, died at The Ottawa Hospital on Aug. 2, 2019, after being transferred from the Brockville Jail.

The province says the inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Motard’s death, and a jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

No further details surrounding the incident were provided.

Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, the regional supervising coroner for the east region, made the announcement Thursday. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

Further details about the date and location of the inquest will be provided at a later date, ministry officials said.
